I want to start by thanking everyone who gave me feedback about my Alfred pitch last week, as public speaking is one of my biggest fears.
All the advice was awesome and helped me to feel prepared, and despite getting nervous during question time, I think it went ok.
But while I wait for the result, it’s time to turn my attention to what’s next for Alfred, and the road ahead.
When I was overweight, I struggled with my self esteem and use to beat myself up for not eating perfectly, and I believe it’s because I didn’t know how much energy I was eating, and thought eating a single ice cream would make me fat.
But I’ve learned that’s simply not the case, and trying to build a tool that helps people understand that, while enjoying their food, is what I’m all about.
So what’s next for Alfred?
Most diet apps are complicated and require a lot of work, and with Alfred we've set out to change that, and make a diet app that’s simple and accessible for anyone wanting to improve their health and have more energy.
Those of you closest to me know I’ve been battling away at Alfred for over 5 years, and must been wondering what on earth is taking me so long!?!?
And the truth is that I have no idea what I’m doing, and as my old coach Jake White would say: “The reality is boy… you’ve been making mistake after mistake”.
But after rectifying my biggest mistake in late 2019, my co-founders wisely suggested that we just “throw Alfred together and get it out the door” before the end of 2020.
So after a 4 year labour, Alfred was born into the App Store last Christmas Eve, and many people have understandably found it hard telling me that my baby is ugly, knowing that I’ve poured my heart and soul into it.
But luckily I’ve still received plenty of feedback, and we've managed to improve Alfred a lot in the last year.
Below is a quick look at what we've done, plus the road ahead which includes a schmick new design to be released on Christmas Eve.
Also our Android version is almost ready, and if you’d like to join the trial and help us squash bugs, then please click on the button below.
To those of you who are Alfred subscribers, joined the Android waiting list, or just gave Alfred a crack over the past year, I can’t thank you enough as you’ve helped us make progress towards achieving our goal of helping people to eat better and live happier.
As thanks, I’d love to shout everyone who’s helped me a drink at the Alfred Christmas Party on Sat 18th of December at The Dock. Food and drinks will be provided, with the evening kicking off at 6pm.
Playing Rugby for a living was an absolute dream come true, and while I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I retired, making the transition happen has been bloody tough.
But I’m getting close, and I’m looking forward to returning the favour to those of you who’ve been supporting me through all the mistakes and tough times.
I’ll never forget it.
Ben
Hey Mate,
I think you are doing a cracking job with this and love the way you share the experience so we can all travel the journey with you.
Personally I think the visual impact of exercise was enormous, although now I'm getting better at tracking and understanding what energy the foods I eat carry, sometimes I like to leave it out and its my buffer.
Congratulations on a great year, I will try to get there on the 18th for a beer and chat but its a going to be a pretty busy day.
Thank you and Merry Christmas
Leroy
