Awesome stuff, I feel the same about writing, I'll stress about what I need to write about, take some notes, think about it and then never write a single thing! The best is when it just comes naturally and then just say 'fuck it' and hit publish.
Looking forward to hearing all the thoughts in Ben's head :)
Let me know if you ever need help with Alfred as well!!
Great stuff, Ben. Perfectionism definitely holds us back. For me, I think it is also insecurity and fear if being judged or not good enough. I was fascinated in your post about trolls. Makes me wonder how these people think or why they even behave like that. Being kind is so important. Write on😉
Thanks Dianna. Yeah, trolls aren't my issues because I've learned their lives aren't going great and have come to actually feel sorry for them. My perfectionism comes from worrying about people I know think, not what strangers write about me on the internet.
“I know this blog is about mental health and how I share my struggles, but truth be told, my life is great and I’m a bit over writing about sad stuff.”
Powerful Benny, it can be so easy to define your self by a season of life and end up its hostage. So glad you’re doing this and I’m looking forward to seeing where this journey takes you! Great article 👊
Holy shit! Thanks mate! That makes me feel good and like I’m doing a good thing!
I actually noticed my post this week got less interaction and I think it’s because I’ve gone away from telling horror stories from my past and I’m not writing about the individual, really personal stuff because it’s not presenting it’s self. It’s like a sign of where I’m at. It’s a good thing. It means it’s working. I can’t write honestly about feeling down or struggling with something if I’m not feeling that way.
Perfectionism is kinda like seeking permanent happiness. It’s not possible. You could write what you think is the perfect blog, then pull it apart tomorrow.
I think people like reading stuff that makes them feel better, and reading how you where struggling makes them feel ok about their challenges. But here's the challenge for us, do we want to keep writing about how we WHERE doing it tough? But now that we aren't as much, what do we write about? I think it's time we revisit WHY we're writing. Is it to help others? Or just ourselves? I think any successful writer finds a topic to write about that aligns both.
Spot on, mate. I think it's very important to revisit your own 'why' if and when you feel like you may be drifting off topic. I think that'll be the ongoing battle. I write for myself primarily, I share it in the hope others gain something from it. The challenging thing about finding that sweet spot is that it will move as we evolve. Just like this perfectionism paradox, you might write something that is of no interest to someone, yest absolutely perfect for someone else. I think we juts gotta stick to that 'why' and what will be will be.
I was just going through some old stuff and found this little note that I wrote to myself back at the beginning of last year. It is from Seth Godin: The most important blog-yours. The blog you write every day is the blog that you need the most. It is a compass and a mirror, a chance to put a stake in the ground and shape your thoughts. And the most important post? - The one that you write tomorrow.
"There's no such thing as perfect, only the endless pursuit of perfection" - Tom Brady. If he can't find it then what chance does the rest of us have! hahahaha. Time to embrace being perfectly imperfect while always trying to be better.
Indeed. I've managed to shed it in lots of parts of my life (running particularly) but now time to weed it out of my writing and mind once and for all.

Thanks mate! Give the 25 mins challenge a crack. Heres a timer and press publish when the time is up! https://pomofocus.io
That'd be awesome mate! Lets chat about how we can get you involved with Alfred over a jog? Friday R4R?
Keen for a run on Friday, yep!

100% mate. There's lots of seasons in life and footy is filled with teams who do shit one year, only to bounce back and win the premiership the next.
🙌🙌

(pretty good huh?)
So true! Love Seth's Purple Cow and his saying "If you want to be remarkable, we worth making a remark about"
So great Ben! Yes just do it! I like the term perfectly imperfect :). Not sure why society decided we needed to be perfect, whatever perfect is?!

Enjoyed this read mate! Time to take down perfectionism
