Last night I got to sit down and chat with 2022 Australian of the Year Dylan Alcott.
Thanks to Travla, Dylan swung past
and and I’m still buzzing today and in awe of the guy for his positivity and mindset.Highlights for me:
When we pulled me up for saying his disability is ‘bad luck’ when the thinks it was actually great luck and enables him to lead the life he does.
Dylan saying Stoicism is a leadership trait of the past - which I totally agree with.
How we he wished he leaned into being different when he was younger.
And how he agrees that “resilience is the strength you draw from others”.
Anyways, check out the YouTube video above for the full 12-minute interview, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Cheers.
It was a great evening and great interview! You both did a great job! I think it's hard to know how a person feels about their disability so it was great that Dylan corrected you. I learnt in a unit last semester that some people prefer person first language while others prefer identity first and the only way to know which one they prefer is to ask or be corrected :).
I highly recommend his book to anyone who hasn't read it too. He talks about being grateful for his disability but also highlights the importance of communication as he was often left out of things because people weren't sure he would be able to take part.
Sounds like a good discussion. I listened to a podcast he did recently with Mark Bouris (it’s called Straight Talk) - he is an awesome person with an inspirational mindset. Definitely worth a listen if you have time.
