Last week was one of the best weeks of my life.
It was exciting, challenging, and meaningful all rolled into one, and I was exhausted yesterday.
In the past when I was this exhausted, the black dogs would bark loudly.
But yesterday, there was nothing but silence, and I couldn’t even hear a puppy whimper.
So in an attempt to savour the moment—as I know good times don’t last—I've written this little recap to reflect on what was an amazing week.
A week I never thought was possible when I was burned out and depressed.
Anzac Day
600 people attended our dawn service and had a family who lost their son in Afghanistan thank us for putting it on.
Hosted a gunfire breakfast (rum and black coffee) after and had 120 runners participate in a special Anzac edition of Running for Resilience.
It was the Dock's biggest day ever, despite closing the pub two hours early!
Running for Resilience
Had 550+ runners over 4 events. Our biggest week ever!
Had 380 runners on Wednesday alone, with many bringing their headlamps to help run in the dark safely.
Sadly, one runner/walker was visibly distressed and broke down in tears 500m into the walk. Fortunately, one of our volunteers was able to comfort her and walked her back to the start. She returned to the Dock the next day to thank us and mentioned she was feeling much better! Well done, Deana!
We opened our bank account and prepped for some exciting news we’ll share this week! Stay tuned…
The Brumbies won!
It was an awesome win against the previously undefeated Hurricanes, much needed after a tough loss against Auckland the week before.
The weather was amazing, the game entertaining, the bloke singing the anthems was incredible, and the day proved Rugby is not dead!
It was also my first game doing commentary for ABC radio, which was fun!
The Dock bus was full (and on time lol)
And more
I volunteered at the Jerrabomberra parkrun as R4R has started a monthly ‘vollie takeover’ to help other running communities. Our next one is at Wagi Bridge on 25th May, and click here to register.
Had a great breakfast and chat with good friend
after parkrun.Last Sunday, I took the girls to watch the Central Coast Mariners take on Sydney FC in the Women’s A-League semi-final. Great day out despite the 1-0 loss.
Did our weekly boxing session with the Dock crew!
I got back on the MyFitnessPal bandwagon. I had taken a 3-month break from food tracking after shutting down Alfred. My eating had slipped, with lots of evening snacking. But it feels good to be back and I’m already noticing that I’m making better choices.
Found my Oura ring! My precious!
Finished the week at my parents' farm, preparing for the
30km race on 1 June. Its goal is to raise awareness of logging in the area, and Dad's making Eucalyptus oil for each runner as a gift and symbol of what they are raising awareness for. Click to here to see how we make it.
Perhaps I'm doing too much and spreading myself thin?
But jeez whiz life is good when you have energy to do fun stuff, and then do the fun stuff!
Anyways, time to crack on and have another great week!
You are a good man Ben and you are making a great contribution to this community. Canberrans are lucky to have you living amongst us.
You are nice Ben. Keep rocking Bro...
