Tuesday’s press conference was fascinating and a must watch for any Rugby tragic.
From tears, to stabs at the media and everything in between, Eddie’s homecoming has given the game a much-needed boost leading into a World Cup year.
I highly recommend watching it, but if you don’t have time, here’s the key points I took away from it:
Eddie believes we have the talent to win the World Cup.
Mark Ella (who was at the presser) told Eddie he is not coming to watch until the Wallabies are playing good. A challenge Eddie accepted.
All players believe they are operating at 100% and Eddie said his challenge is to inspire them to do more.
He also said he’s unsure of his approach for managing the players, and needs to get to know them first.
He thinks the players don't have mental scaring from past losses, but work needs to be done regarding how they react to in-game disappointment.
Our defense needs to embrace the World War One "digger" mentality.
Traditionally our attack is at its best when it manipulates space by moving the ball well. Something he said Brumbies coach Bernie Larkham was a master at.
Kicking games can be beautiful if done right, and I think Nic White will flourish under Eddie’s guidance.
Running the ball at all costs is dumb.
The Giteau law will be reviewed in due course. Stay tuned.
Chairman Hamish McLennan had a dig at England when he said he’s glad they didn't put a non-compete clause in Eddie's departure package.
Eddie reckons it's everyone’s responsibility to help turn the game around. I agree.
He also said players will either “select or de-select” themselves during Super Rugby.
In parting shot, Eddie said: "If the players are reading the garbage you lot (journalists) write then they aren't smart enough to play for the wallabies" which I made me chuckle, but was surprised no journalist fought back. Eddie 1. Media 0.
What do you think about on the above? And would these types of summaries from games be helpful?
Thanks for the summary Ben! I will always appreciate them, especially when I need to prioritise other things (like uni).
Love Eddies dig at the toxic media!
